Private commissions are one of my favorite things about being an artist. They allow me and the client to collaborate on a piece, instead of just taking part in a transaction.
Being able to work directly with a private collector or a company is really fulfilling. It’s the best way to ensure that the client is getting exactly what they want.
In most cases, a commission is the best plan if you have a specific spot in your house or office that is in need of a custom piece.
For those interested in a commission, I’ve outlined the process below. You’ll most likely find what you’re inquiring about, but if you still have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me to discuss! I love chatting about the process and enjoy hearing about clients' plans.
If you're ready to book your commission, scroll to the bottom of this page to fill out the form.
After you reach out to me with a commission inquiry, the first step is to schedule a Zoom meeting. I’ve found that zoom is the best way to have a genuine connection (while we’re all still getting back to normal with the pandemic).
This Zoom session acts as a way to connect in a deeper way, but also to determine if we’re a good fit for each other.
Sometimes clients know exactly what they want, and sometimes they know they want a custom piece, but aren’t sure the direction they want it to take. Both of these types of clients are ok by me! That’s part of the fun.
We’ll use this Zoom session to start to develop that direction. It’s the first step in the collaboration process.
The size and complexity of the painting will determine the price of the commission.
Check out some prices of my original paintings to give you an idea of how I price original work.
Your commission will be similar to the original prices, but slightly higher because it is a custom and very unique piece made specifically for you! I’ll send you a quote and you can let me know what you think.
Like most service related jobs, I have to hold both parties accountable. That’s why I use a 50% / 50% payment structure and always have both parties sign a contract before any work can begin.
I take this step very seriously because it’s the best way to protect both of us! My goal is to make sure that you are 100% happy with the final product and the process as a whole.
We will both sign a contract that outlines ownership rights, painting details, delivery date, etc. At the same time, the client will pay their 50% deposit.
Once that’s all done, it’s my favorite step, time to really get started!
The best way for me to get an idea of the style you like is for me to know which of my existing paintings resonate with you. At this stage, clients will choose 2-4 pieces from my website and give a short summary of what they like about each.
The #1 feedback I get during this phase is in regards to color. It’s a good idea to think about the colors in your home, your favorite colors, or the colors that you want the new piece to include.
If you want help during this step, you can feel free to send some pictures of your house or office and I can guide you.
It’s also during this phase that we can settle on a size for your new piece. That’s the beauty of a commission! We can make any painting fit any sized area.
(Note: in most cases, we will have already decided a size so that it will be included in the price and contract. Step 2 and 3 are usually done simultaneously.)Once we have your inspiration pieces, colors in mind, and size, I can create a studio sketch. This is a smaller version of the painting that I create in my sketchbook.
Using digital software, I can even superimpose the sketch onto your wall to make 100% sure that you will like the final, larger version.
Once you give final approval on the studio sketch, it’s time to put the paint to the canvas!
Why choose a commission?
Using the studio sketch as my guide, this is where I start on your actual painting. Timeline can be anywhere from 3 weeks to several months, depending on the depth and complexity of the piece.
I keep the client updated with teaser pics and status updates along the way.
When the final painting is complete, I will schedule you in for delivery or drop off (if you’re local.)
If being shipped, your painting will be wrapped and protected with care, ensuring safe delivery when it reaches you.
Each shipment is fully insured and sent first class.
Commissions are my favorite ways to connect with clients. It’s such an intimate experience for us both. It’s such a rewarding experience and I love working on commissions.
